Both Mari and Reid were subdued that evening during their short walk to the nearby village. Mari was wondering what had happened to sober Reid in the past few hours and Reid was wondering how to ask Mari about the scars tactfully.

Mari refused to feel despondent for too long and resolved to spend money to make herself feel better. What better way to lift the spirits than to drag out ye old charge cards once more! She stopped by the stalls to look at the wares and ended up purchasing a lacy shawl for herself and one for Denise along with several pieces of silver jewelry that caught her eye. Reid also made a few purchases, a beautiful silver and coral necklace that he explained was for his mother and several handpainted bowls he planned to put in his living room. Although it would have been nice to corner one of the roving photographers and have their picture taken, Reid made it a rule to never to have his picture taken, so he dismissed the idea quickly. In fact, he had been surprised that Mari had never suggested taking his photograph on their outings.

It was as if she already knew he would make up some excuse or come right out and say no.

"I could go for a double margarita right about now," Mari announced, tucking her packages into the large straw bag she carried.

"That's all you want?"

"Well, whatever else they can find to feed me wouldn't hurt. I'm not a very good drunk," she confessed.

"Get sick, huh?" he asked sympathetically.

Mari shook her head. "No, not really, I just don't feel as if I'm in control. Actually, it's only hard liquor that does it to me, so I’m careful. I can drink wine without any problem." She'd only had that problem since her hospital stay. She wasn't sure if it had been due to all the drugs she'd had to take then or just another new quirk of Mari's. Alicia had always been able to drink anyone under the table, except Reid.

Mari did have a margarita along with a delicious fish stew and warm corn tortillas to mop up the spicy broth. What surprised her was that Reid sat across from her drinking straight tequila. She watched him lick the salt off the back of his hand, suck a slice of lime then down the potent alcohol. He ate most of his stew, downed several more drinks, and still remained relatively sober although there was a dark glitter in his eyes that hadn't been there before. And during the whole meal he watched her every move the way a cat watched a mouse.

"I wish you'd stop that," she muttered, staring back at him with as much anger as she could muster. She knew that he wanted her even more than he had over the past few days. Her body tightened in reaction.

"Stop what?" He lounged in the chair, one arm flung carelessly across the back. He looked as if he was thoroughly enjoying the idea that he was making her uncomfortable.
